Tottenham told to complete signing after source’s Souttar update – pundit

Frank McAvennie isn’t surprised to hear Tottenham are targetting defensive signings in January.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, told Spurs they must strengthen their backline as soon as possible.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider Nuno Espirito Santo is keen on luring Stoke’s Harry Souttar, 23, to the club.

It is understood the former Wolves manager tried to sign the defender when he was at Molineux.

This site revealed on 14 October that Spurs are one of a number of Premier League sides tracking the 6ft 5in centre-back ahead of the January window.

Souttar signed a new long-term deal with Stoke in February, meaning he is tied to the club until the end of June 2025.

McAvennie cited Tottenham’s recent performance against Newcastle as proof that Nuno needs to bolster his defence.

“I mean if they are going to strengthen any area, it needs to be the defence,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The problem with these defenders, is strikers want to play against them.

“Any striker worth their salt can score goals against that defence. I said before their game against Newcastle.

“Callum Wilson will score goals against that defence even with limited chances.

“They have midfield players playing in there. They are going nowhere with that backline.

“I know it’s obvious but you need to sign quality defenders if you want to have a better defence.

“It makes sense they are looking at new defenders, they have to sign someone in January.”

Tottenham

Tottenham have conceded 13 goals in nine Premier League games this season.

However, they have only scored nine goals.

In other news, a club insider claims Spurs are well placed to sign another Premier League club’s star man.
