Report: Tottenham get answer after enquiry for 22-y/o attacker from PL giants
Manchester United have rebuffed Tottenham’s approach for their 22-year-old attacker Anthony Martial, according to a report.
The Manchester Evening News has claimed that despite Martial’s agent revealing that the 22-year-old wants to leave Old Trafford this summer, United have quoted Tottenham “silly prices”.
Martial signed for £54million from Monaco in 2015 but United think he has risen dramatically in value, despite not being a regular starter for Jose Mourinho.
Martial’s contract expires in 2019 but United do have a one-year option they can activate so are in no hurry to sell.
Football Insider verdict:
This was perhaps inevitable after Tottenham reportedly held out for more money from United for Toby Alderweireld. Despite being big business, football still has a tit-for-tat mentality, and if United’s nose is out of joint over Alderweireld, they’re unlikely to want to do Spurs a favour over Martial. United have sold players to rivals before – Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Arsenal is an obvious and recent example – but they obviously rate Martial more. Would they really want to send a player to Spurs who could potentially fire the north London side ahead of them in the race for the top-four spots? It’s a weird one though. Mourinho obviously doesn’t trust him enough to guarantee him a starting spot, yet rates him at around the £60-£70million mark. That’s just stupid and hopefully this gets sorted out for the player’s sake if nothing else. Martial is a prodigious talent and deserves to play week in, week out.
