Virgil van Dijk cited as Tottenham told to agree defender signing after source’s reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has insisted Tottenham need to sign a “top centre-half”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker backed Eric Dier to agree a new contract but urged Spurs to sign another central defender in the summer.

On 26 February, sources told this site that the Lilywhites are keen to wrap up a two-year contract extension for the 29-year-old as soon as possible.

Antonio Conte is believed to be a “huge” admirer of Dier’s skillset and versatility and considers him a key member of the squad.

Conte’s other central defensive options include Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga and Clement Lenglet who is on loan from Barcelona.

Tanganga has made just five appearances for Spurs this season and Lenglet will return to Spain at the end of the season.

When asked if Tottenham will be keen to keep Dier, McAvennie told Football Insider:He is an important player to the squad.

But I keep saying, look at what happened to Liverpool when they brought in [Virgil] Van Dijk, everything changed.

Tottenham

Dier is a great servant and a great personality to have around the dressing room, but they need a top centre-half. You need someone at the top of his game. I just do not think they have got that in their locker, they have not got a good defence.

“I understand them giving Dier a contract but they still need to bring in a proven, household name centre-half and Tottenham will become a different team.”
