Whelan backs ‘mouthwatering’ Leeds to beat Spanish giants to top signings after Phil Hay Show reveal

Noel Whelan insists Leeds United can attract top players ahead of top Spanish clubs this summer.

The former Whites hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims a move to Elland Road is an attractive prospect for the world’s biggest talents.

When Victor Orta appeared on The Phil Hay Show last week, he admitted Leeds have the “ambition” to sign top players.

Leeds achieved a top ten finish on their return to the top flight.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side finished just three points off seventh place, which would have confirmed a place in next season’s inaugural Europa Conference League.

While this third European competition doesn’t boast the same pedigree as the Champions League, Whelan claims Leeds have shown enough progress to attract top players this summer.

The ex-striker questioned why a player would move to La Liga ahead of the Premier League.

“There are more exciting games in the Premier League compared to say, La Liga,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The only one you look out for is Real Madrid v Barcelona and maybe Atletico. Aside from that, you’re struggling to find a mouthwatering game.

“When you look in the Premier League, they’re all mouthwatering. It’s the best league in the world.

“You can’t force a player to sign, it comes down to personal preference, but Leeds can beat Spanish sides.

“But you look at Leeds United’s squad now and see we are starting to have a squad that is saturated with internationals.

“We have really exciting players and a fantastic manager. The club is a very attractive prospect right now. It’s mouthwatering. Europe has that pull but it’s down to the player.”
