Why Newcastle should swoop for 20-year-old attacker from PL rivals
COMMENT By Derek Smithson
Newcastle should consider a move for Chelsea attacker Charly Musonda this summer to help bolster their squad.
The 20-year-old is currently on the books at Stamford Bridge and seems unlikely to make any inroads to the first team in the near future.
The Belgium Under-21 international is yet to make a senior appearance for the Blues, but is still a highly rated talent at the London club and a loan move next season could be just what he needs to develop.
Chelsea have become renowned for loaning out countless young players during recent years and Newcastle should look to exploit that policy next season.
Rafael Benitez’s side have already experienced first hand the benefits of Chelsea’s system and enjoyed Christian Atsu’s services last year on loan, who has now completed a permanent switch to St James’ Park.
Musonda has the potential to follow a similar path and a first spell in the Premier League would be a good test of his abilities.
The left winger is blessed with great pace and trickery, something that should prove very useful in the top flight.
He has been loaned out once before to Spanish club Real Betis, where he scored one goal and supplied three assists in 24 appearances.
Newcastle do have the quality of Matt Ritchie in the wide position that should aid them offensively in the Premier League, but perhaps a lack of pace on the counter attack that could be a huge asset.
The Magpies should prioritise a loan move for Musonda, a player that will be desperate to prove himself away from Stamford Bridge and someone that could give the side a different dimension.
In other Newcastle transfer news, they are set to complete a goalkeeper transfer.
