Betting latest: Newcastle installed joint favourites to sign Liverpool striker (not Ings)

By Harvey Byrne

Newcastle have been installed as the joint favourites to sign Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge this summer, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

Bet Victor have priced the Magpies at 8/1 alongside both West Ham and Arsenal to sign the 27-year-old forward before the September transfer deadline.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain trail closely behind at 10/1, while Tottenham and “any Chinese club” are also in the running at 12/1.

There have been no recent links between Newcastle and Sturridge and Liverpool teammate Adam Lallana is even backing him for a big season as he prepares to put his injury problems behind him.

The Magpies have also been reported to have an interest in another Anfield-based forward in the form of Danny Ings with the Sun claiming on Sunday that the north east giants had turned their attentions to Lucas Perez after missing out on the Englishman.

However, Sturridge could also be on the radar of manager Rafa Benitez as he looks to bolster his strike force ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Despite scoring just seven goals in 27 matches in all competitions last season Sturridge usually boasts a stunning strike rate and in 119 matches in total for Liverpool he has returned 61 goals.

The 25-time capped England international would also bring plenty of experience with him to St. James’ Park, which current striker pair Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic are lacking.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies have held discussions over this Atletico Madrid forward.
