Newcastle are keen on signing Arsenal forward Lucas Perez, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the Magpies want the 28-year-old to lead their line in the new season
It is understood that the North East club have been keen to bring in a new striker and that their search has grown “desperate” after missing out Cedric Bakambu, Tammy Abraham and Danny Ings.
The report details Arsenal are looking to find a suitor for Perez despite him only moving to the Emirates Stadium last summer for £17million.
Perez endured a frustrating campaign in north London, making a total of 21 appearances.
The Spaniard has aspirations of making his nation’s World Cup squad in 2018, but will need significantly more game time to do so.
However, he did show his qualities in the English top flight when given the opportunity and proved his quality in front of goal.
The pacy attacker managed seven goals and five assists during the last campaign, which caused Arsenal supporters pleading with Arsene Wenger to give him more game time.
Football Insider verdict:
Newcastle are going to need a new striker going into the season and Perez would be superb at St James’ Park. They currently have Dwight Gayle, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez as senior options, which leaves them a little short of quality and could see them dragged into a relegation battle. Arsenal forward Perez showed last season that he can cut it in England and Newcastle could be a great platform to show off his full potential. The Spaniard scored 24 goals in just 59 games for La Liga side Deportivo and would arrive at Newcastle with some real pedigree.
In other Newcastle transfer news, Huddersfield have joined them in the race to sign a £10million-rated winger.
