Conor Bradley sends message as Sunderland confirm fresh agreement
Sunderland secured a significant agreement on Sunday as they announced that centre-back Dan Ballard has signed a new deal.
The 26-year-old has penned fresh terms on a contract that is set to keep him at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2029, while the Black Cats also hold the option to extend those terms by a further year.
Ballard netted a crucial stoppage-time goal to help the Wearsiders into the Championship play-off final last term, and his influence has carried over to this season upon their return to the Premier League.
Regis Le Bris’ side are currently closer to a European place than they are the relegation zone, and Ballard has been central to their impressive effort, having started in 20 of their 29 league games so far.

Sunderland’s form has taken a dip in recent weeks, as they had suffered three consecutive league defeats prior to last weekend’s trip to take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Le Bris’ men put a stop to their losing run by securing a 1-1 draw on the South Coast, with Ballard notching a staggering 15 defensive contributions to help his team cling on to a point.
The Northern Ireland international showed once again why he is so crucial to Sunderland’s fortunes at the moment, and he has now been rewarded for his efforts with his new contract being announced on Sunday.
- Nordi Mukiele: “Big Daaaaaaan.”
- Romaine Mundle: “Amazing DB.”
- Eliezer Mayenda: “Gaucho.”
The defender took to Instagram to share a message after signing his new deal, as he posted a photo of himself at the Stadium of Light, accompanied by the caption: “Over the moon to be extending my stay at this incredible club. What a journey we’ve been on so far, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
Messages of support from his teammates quickly poured into the comments, with the likes of Trai Hume, Eliezer Mayenda and Nordi Mukiele all sharing their thoughts.
Notably, there was also a message from Liverpool right-back and Northern Ireland teammate Conor Bradley, who simply commented with: “Well deserved big man”, followed by a love heart emoji.
Sunderland are already planning next contract extension
Sunderland’s promotion back to the Premier League prompted a significant turnover in their squad last summer, and that saw some of their promotion-winning heroes pushed to the fringes of the squad.
Dennis Cirkin is one of those who has suffered from the influx of new faces, but the left-back eventually recovered from injury to fight his way back into the fold in the early stages of 2026.
Le Bris suggested at the start of February that he “thinks an agreement will be found” to keep the 23-year-old around beyond the end of the season, according to The Northern Echo, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.
The boss’ suggestion relied upon the defender remaining consistent and also being able to prove his fitness, but he has picked up another knock again that has ruled him out in recent weeks.
It is clear that the Black Cats are hopeful that Cirkin may become the next man to pen a new deal, but they will also be cautious about making him an offer if his fitness continues to provide concern.
