‘Embarrassing’: Man United legends slammed as impact of Michael Carrick digs revealed

Michael Carrick and the Manchester United board are unphased by the ongoing digs and comments made by some of the club’s biggest legends.

The likes of Gary Neville and in particular Paul Scholes have been critical of the interim manager’s appointment and potential full-time role.

The latter took to social media following the defeat to Newcastle, seemingly to revel in the defeat, but has received plenty of backlash from fans and his ex-teammates.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Scholes and other negative voices surrounding the club are talking into the abyss.

Their comments have have little to no impact on the manager or decision-makers at Old Trafford, and Carrick remains in a strong position to be the next Man United manager.

Michael Carrick in pole position to be Man United manager

Football Insider revealed on 28 February that Carrick is in a strong position at Man United and their recent success under him has strengthened his bid for the role.

Despite some criticism from loud voices surrounding the club, Carrick remains a leading contender for United and remains focused on a strong end to the season.

Paul Scholes never said anything to anybody about anything as a player,” Brown told Football Insider.

“He wasn’t happy with the media and punditry stuff he was doing, and now he’s on one of these podcasts and he’s always saying things to go against the grain.

“I don’t think anybody takes much notice of what Paul says, to be honest, he’s doing it to provoke a response and this time he’s got one from some people.

“They didn’t play particularly well at Newcastle but should’ve got a result out of the game, so to go on social media celebrating that they’ve lost is embarrassing.

“It won’t have any impact on Michael Carrick, nor should it, he’s focused on the job he’s doing at United and as far as anybody’s concerned, he’s doing that job well.

“The United board won’t take any notice either, it’s just one or two people like Scholes or Neville speaking up, all that really matters is what’s happening on the pitch.”

Who else is on Man United’s managerial shortlist?

Carrick remains the favourite to become the next permanent Man United manager, but is not the only one on their radar as they make plans for the future.

The likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Carlo Ancelotti are among the big-name bosses being linked with the role, with a decision expected at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider that Roberto de Zerbi is on Man United’s radar and would “love” to return to the Premier League this summer.

However, he is not believed to be among the leading contenders for the Red Devils and is behind Carrick in the pecking order, making his arrival unlikely.

They are not the only club looking for a new boss, though, with the likes of Tottenham, Crystal Palace and potentially Bournemouth and Fulham in the market.
