Jens Berthel Askou’s stance on Celtic offer revealed as Parkhead links intensify

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou is being increasingly linked with the vacant manager’s job at Celtic for next season.

The Bhoys are waiting until the summer to make their next permanent appointment, and work has already begun to try and identify the best possible successor to Martin O’Neill.

Football Insider revealed last week that Berthel Askou is one of two leading candidates for the role alongside Roberto Martinez, with the bookmakers even handing him a slight edge as the current favourite.

The moment for Celtic’s next managerial appointment is edging ever closer as we approach the end of the season, and it is clear that Berthel Askou is firmly in the frame for the role, with links over a switch to Parkhead continuing to intensify.

Jens Berthel Askou tipped to get Premier League job

Berthel Askou’s debut season in the Scottish Premiership is unsurprisingly seeing him linked with one of the country’s top jobs, due to the success that his Motherwell side have enjoyed this term.

The Fir Park outfit appear destined for European football at a minimum, and could even have an outside shot at the title, as they are currently 10 points behind leaders Hearts with a game in hand.

The Well have won plenty of plaudits for their attractive style of football, and they are on course to record their highest league finish since Stephen Robinson led them to third in 2019-20.

Berthel Askou’s name is being increasingly mentioned in regard to the Celtic job, but that is unlikely to be the only opportunity that could become available to him ahead of next season.

Former Rangers and Motherwell striker Ross McCormack believes that the Dane would turn down any offer to manage Celtic at the moment and will instead move to the Premier League.

“I think he (Berthel Askou) turns that (Celtic down),” McCormack said on the Open Goal podcast.

“I think he goes bigger than that. I’ll bet he goes to the Premier League before he goes to Celtic.”

Next Celtic manager to deal with major squad overhaul

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that Celtic will accept offers for Daizen Maeda this summer, as the forward prepares to enter the final year of his contract.

A significant turnover in the playing squad is expected at Celtic Park ahead of next season, and the club heirarchy have decided that the time is right for the 28-year-old to be part of the upheaval.

That looks set to leave something of a clean slate for whoever does take the reins in the dugout for next term, and as a result, they will have ample room within the group to bring in their own targets and mould the team in their image.

Berthel Askou may yet be afforded that opportunity, but whether it is one that he will be keen to take on right now remains to be seen at the moment.
