Keith Wyness: Martin O’Neill ‘comes to the rescue of the Celtic board again’
Martin O’Neill kept Celtic’s title dream alive as the Hoops came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Rangers.
That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who is stunned at how O’Neill managed to earn his Celtic side a point at Ibrox.
Youssef Chermiti’s double, including a stunning overhead kick, had Rangers deservedly 2-0 ahead at the break after a dominant first half, where Celtic failed to register a shot on target.
Celtic’s Scottish Premiership title hopes looked over, but O’Neill’s two substitutions at the break turned the game in their favour, and a point was salved in the second half thanks to goals from Kieran Tierney and Reo Hatate.

VISIT THE CELTIC MATCH HUBOld Firm ‘great advert for Scottish football’
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes a draw suited leaders Hearts best in the title race.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the title is “still all to play for.”
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Another fabulous Old Firm thriller, it really was. I couldn’t take my eyes off it, it was fascinating.
“Yes, Chermiti, you know, starting off the whole thing in the first half, you’re right, game of two halves. And then St Martin comes to the rescue of the Celtic board again, it’s hard to believe how he does that and gets a point.
“Now the trouble is, of course, for both clubs, a point wasn’t what they both wanted. Chasing Hearts, somebody had to try and get three, but it wasn’t to be, but it was another great occasion, a great game of football, fabulous to watch, keeps the whole dream alive of the Old Firm games, and there’ll be a few more to come this season.
“They’re going to be pretty crucial as well. Nobody’s out of it in my view. I still think they’re all going to play each other a few times when the split comes in the league, so there is still all to play for, but what a thriller, what an atmosphere as well, having last having some opposing fans in the stadiums it makes a difference, so overall great advert for Scottish football.”

Benjamin Nygren exit rumours emerge
Wyness also told Football Insider that he expects Benjamin Nygren to leave Celtic at the end of the season.
Nygren could be a target for Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window due to his excellent goalscoring form in his first season in Glasgow.
The 24-year-old only joined Celtic for around £2million, meaning the club will get a profit on their investment, if they were to sell in the summer.
