Newcastle make enquiry for PL midfielder on Benitez wishlist – report
By Derek Smithson
Newcastle have made an enquiry for Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva, according to a report.
The Northern Echo claim that the Magpies are interested in signing the 30-year-old this summer as they aim to improve their squad options.
It is understood that manager Rafael Benitez wants to add a couple of midfielders in the transfer window and has identified the Liverpool ace as a potential candidate.
The pair previously worked together during Benitez’s time as manager at Anfield and signed Lucas for £5million in 2007.
Lucas’ contract with the Merseyside club is set to expire at the end of the month and his 10-year stay with the Premier League club could be coming to an end.
The Brazlian has racked up 346 appearances during his time with the Reds and played 31 times across all competitions last year.
However, it’s unclear whether he fits into Jurgen Klopp’s plans going forward and Newcastle view him as someone who can aid their Premier League return next season.
Football Insider verdict:
Newcastle could do with a combative midfielder to play alongside Jonjo Shelvey next year and Lucas would be a brilliant addition. The 22-time capped Brazil International is hugely experienced in the top flight and would bring a calmness to the Magpies side. He should be available on a free transfer if his contract is allowed to run down this summer and it would be a no-brainer to convince him to join St James’ Park. Lucas still has plenty more to give in English football and can revive his career in the North East. Newcastle will need a controlling figure in the centre to help them avoid relegation next year and Lucas could be the perfect screen in front of the defence.
