Sources: Door opens for Newcastle United to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin as talks held

Newcastle United have been given new encouragement in their bid to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton this summer, Football Insider understands.

The main competition for the striker’s signature has been Arsenal but they are prioritising the capture of Gabriel Jesus from Man City and making progress on a deal.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that Calvert-Lewin, 25, is on their target list as they look to recruit an elite centre-forward capable of scoring 20-plus goals a season.

This site revealed earlier this month (14 May) that talks have taken place with the striker’s representatives as Newcastle make their pitch to lure him to the north-east.

Calvert-Lewin had been attracted by the possibility of joining a more established Arsenal team but the door is now open for Newcastle to make a sustained move.

Everton will listen to offers for Calvert-Lewin as they look to raise cash and completely reshape a team that narrowly avoided relegation in the just-completed Premier League campaign.

It is believed that around £45million could be enough to persuade Everton to sell Calvert-Lewin, who has been hailed “amazing” by teammate Salomon Rondon..

He has a contract at Goodison Park that runs until the summer of 2025.

Newcastle scored only 44 goals from their 38 Premier League games in 2021-22 despite signing Chris Wood from Burnley in January.

They are in the market for an elite striker who can lead the line and hold the ball up as well as convert the chances the team create.

Calvert-Lewin has suffered badly from injury over the last 12 months, and played only 18 matches in all competitions this season.

They yielded five goals, all in the Premier League.
