Newcastle United could beat Arsenal to Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal after source’s transfer update – pundit

Alex McLeish has suggested Newcastle United could tempt Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin into joining them over Arsenal this summer.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Magpies have shown their “ambition” during their “meteoric” rise in recent months.

A recruitment source told Football Insider on Wednesday (27 April) that Calvert-Lewin, 25, has told friends he wants to join Arsenal over Newcastle this summer.

He is expected to leave Everton, with the Toffees open to offers in a bid to raise funds and balance the books.

Both Arsenal and Newcastle are keen to take advantage and strike a deal this summer.

McLeish suggested the Magpies could still lure the hitman to move to the north east instead of north London.

Asked if Newcastle could turn Calvert-Lewin’s head with a tempting proposition, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, I think so.

“I think they’ve already shown their ambition. To transform it in such a short space, Eddie Howe deserves a lot of credit for that.

“You know they are going to have money to spend. They have spent wisely so far. If they can keep up that claim that recruitment, then they don’t want to be fighting in bottom half of the table every year.

“We’ve seen with the rise over the past three months or so, it’s been meteoric.

“That is the level they’re trying to get to eventually. By doing that, they’re going to have to recruit the best players.”

Everton

Calvert-Lewin is contracted at Everton until 2025.

The Toffees could also lose Richarlison after he told his representatives he wants a move away.
