Sources: Newcastle board stance on re-signing Willems is revealed
Newcastle United will not sanction a move for Jetro Willems this summer, Football Insider understands.
As this site revealed on Thursday, several Newcastle stars remain in regular contact with Willems and want him to re-join in the summer window.
A Newcastle source has told Football Insider the club’s board and manager Steve Bruce are not looking for another left back as they work with a strict budget this summer.
As revealed by this site on Tuesday, Bruce has been informed that he only has £8-£10million to spend on new signings.
Willems, 27, is a free agent after being released by Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this week.
Despite being available on a free transfer, Newcastle are not prioritising the signing of a new left back.
The Magpies already have three players capable of playing on the left side of a back four or as a wing back.
Matt Ritchie filled that role and excelled in the final weeks of the season while the equally capable Paul Dummett played as a centre back.
Jamal Lewis signed for the club last summer but has been left in the wilderness after a string of poor performances at the start of 2021.
This month, Football Insider revealed Newcastle have triggered the one-year extension in Dummett’s contract.
It is understood there will also be talks to offer the 29-year-old a new long-term deal.
Willems remains a popular figure among the Newcastle fan base and with the players he shared a pitch with during his loan spell in 2019/20.
However, the club faces a tricky summer as they try to recruit fresh faces with a shoestring budget.
It is understood Bruce is likely to blow his entire summer transfer kitty on one star signing.
