Stefan Borson: This is the ‘massive’ wage saving Tottenham could make after relegation clauses revealed
Tottenham Hotspur would make “massive” savings on their wages if they are relegated from the Premier League this season.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Spurs’ wage bill could drop by more than £80m if they lose their top-flight status.
Tottenham lost 3-1 against Crystal Palace in their latest Premier League outing, ensuring they have now gone 11 games without a league win.
Igor Tudor’s side sit 16th in the table and are just one point above third-bottom West Ham following their poor run of form.
Relegation would have a dramatic impact on Tottenham’s financial situation due to the significant drop in prize money and anticipated commercial issues.

Premier League clubs often have relegation clauses in their players’ contracts to mitigate the costs of dropping out of the top flight.
The Athletic reported on 2 March the vast majority of Spurs’ squad have such relegation clauses that would see their wages drop by around 50 per cent in the Championship.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed how the clauses would impact Tottenham’s wage bill if they are relegated.
“I mean, it’s massive, isn’t it?” said Borson.
“They’ve probably got a wage bill on the first-team playing side of something like £180m, something like that.

“Clearly, the ability to be able to cut that in half broadly, or let’s say 60 per cent for the sake of discussion will save £80-85m. That’s massive in terms of savings on the cost base.
“It’s particularly massive if they can maintain the matchday revenue at where it is and don’t have too many clauses within commercial contracts that are going to hit them hard if they do go into the Championship.”
How much Tottenham’s revenue could instantly drop after relegation
Deloitte’s 2026 Money League revealed Tottenham’s overall wage bill surged from £222m in 2023-24 to £249m last season.
Those numbers could have increased following Spurs’ success in the Europa League under former boss Ange Postecoglou.

The north London giants remain in Europe this season after qualifying automatically for the last 16 of the Champions League, with Atletico Madrid standing in their way of a quarter-final place.
However, Tudor’s primary focus is on helping his side secure their top-flight status over the coming weeks.
Tottenham would instantly lose more than £60m in revenue if they are unable to avoid relegation, with Deloitte’s report revealing their turnover stood at £565m last season.
