The new Gradel: Why reported new Leeds signing will destroy Championship defences
COMMENT By Matt Farr
Leeds are reportedly on the verge of a sensational deal to land Villarreal winger Alfonso Pedraza before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Garry Monk has been working tirelessly to add reinforcements to his promotion-chasing side this month, but has so far managed to procure just the one new recruit – a permanent deal for on-loan star Pablo Hernandez.
However, the hard work of the club’s recruitment staff could finally be set to pay-off, with Spanish winger Pedraza joining on a loan deal until the end of the season.
If they get promoted to the Premier League, Leeds will have the option to buy him on a permanent basis for £8.5million.
But while the potential fee may leave some fans worried, they have absolutely no reason to fear, because Pedraza is a top talent.
The 20-year-old winger has been in scintillating form this season, having joined Segunda Division outfit Lugo on loan from Villarreal in the summer.
From 22 appearances in all competitions, Pedraza has contributed six goals and eight assists; and aside from chief goalscorer Chris Wood, Leeds’ attack is crying out for someone with that kind of hunger in the final third – both in creating chances, and in scoring them himself.
Even at his young age, Pedraza would prove to be an excellent piece of business by Monk and Leeds. He has not had that much top-division experience as of yet, making only the odd cameo appearance for Villarreal in La Liga; but that will be pivotal to Leeds.
The Spain U21 international not only looks a player capable of making an impression on the bigger-stage, but he has also proven he can perform consistently at the equivalent second-tier level – and that is what Leeds will want as they look to continue their bid for promotion from the Championship this term.
Unlike some of Leeds’ current wide options, Pedraza can only play in one position (left-wing). However, he would be an instant upgrade on the likes of Stuart Dallas and Souleymane Doukara.
They are both capable players, and have shown glimpses of quality this season, but do not consistently threaten Championship defences.
With pace, power and a direct style of play, Pedraza will bring a considerable threat to the opposition and one that Leeds fans have not seen since Max Gradel was ripping it up on the wing.
There will be doubts as to how quickly he can translate his form onto the English stage, but the youngster will quickly win everyone over with his unquestionable ability.
