Newcastle told to pull plug on ‘£70m’ Nicolas Jackson deal after Aston Villa decision

Newcastle United have been warned against pursuing a deal to sign Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson as he prepares to return from Bayern Munich.

The 24-year-old has spent the season on loan at Bayern Munich but is not expected to make the permanent switch to Vincent Kompany’s side.

As a result, Chelsea are planning to move him on permanently, and he has emerged on Newcastle’s radar as they aim to strengthen their attacking options.

However, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle are unlikely to pursue a permanent deal for Jackson.

Eddie Howe hopes to sign a more consistent option than his current available strikers, and they may have to look elsewhere as Newcastle accelerate their transfer plans.

Newcastle join Aston Villa in Nicolas Jackson decision

Brown told Football Insider on 3 March that Aston Villa could make a U-turn on Jackson amid concerns about his attitude and likely price tag.

Chelsea remain keen to cash in on the Senegal international, however, and are attempting to drum up interest in a move to another European club this summer.

I wouldn’t expect Jackson to go to Newcastle, no,” Brown told Football Insider.

“For the same reasons I said he wouldn’t go to Villa, and he isn’t consistent enough in front of goal which Newcastle are looking for at the moment.

“That’s the issue they’ve had this season, consistency, and Jackson isn’t the person who’s going to go to St James’ Park and be the answer to everybody’s problems.

From what I hear, there are a few question marks about his attitude and they’ve been there since his time at Chelsea, I think it’s a big reason they let him go.

What type of money are Chelsea going to be asked for as well? Last summer it was around £70-80million I believe, so around that again?

“So if Newcastle want to sign a new striker, I can’t see Jackson being the one they go for, because it’s going to be expensive and I don’t think he’ll solve their problems.”

Eddie Howe sets sights on new striker signing

Jackson is the latest striker to be a linked with a move to St James’ Park as they aim to add firepower to a front line which has been lacking this season.

Howe is believed to be unhappy with his current attacking options as both Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade have struggled since joining last summer.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 12 February that Newcastle will prioritise signing a new striker, as they are unhappy with both Woltemade and Wissa.

Since their arrivals last summer, the pair have a combined eight goals in 37 league games, with seven of those coming from the Germany international.

New options including the likes of Darwin Nunez and Jean-Philippe Mateta have been linked with moves to the North East, as a new striker is likely to come in.
