Whelan cites Ben White as Leeds transfer talks take twist
Leeds United will not be held to ransom over a deal for Romain Perraud, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, compared the situation to the club’s failed pursuit of Ben White last summer.
As revealed by Football Insider on May 24th, Leeds identified the Stade Brest defender as their top left-back target ahead of the summer.
The Whites were confident of striking a deal for the 23-year-old after “encouraging talks” between all parties.
However, as detailed on Tuesday (June 1st), Leeds have grown frustrated by Brest’s £15-18million asking price and are now exploring Huesca’s Javi Galan as an alternative and cheaper option.
Whelan insisted, like White last summer, Leeds will move on if the deal is not right.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “The one thing that we’ve come to grips with and got right so far is transfers.
“We’re not going to be rash with splashing the cash. That’s for sure. It’s got to be right, we’re not going to be held to ransom over players.
“The good thing is that I’m sure there’s not just that one player that’s been lined up. If it isn’t right, you move on and you look elsewhere.
“If you can get your main target, stay strong with a club, get to a fair agreement and get that number one target you want in that position, then you’ve got to do everything possible.
“Like Ben White, we were not going to be held to ransom over a player that is not proven in the Premier League. We know it’s a different kettle of fish.”
Leeds had a £30million bid for former loanee White rejected last summer.
They instead signed Robin Koch and Diego Llorente at centre-back.
In other news, Leeds United offered chance to re-sign former star.
