‘Rangers make final Jack Butland decision as Carl Rushworth deal gathers pace’

Rangers are pushing ahead with a deal to sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton and it could spell the end of Jack Butland’s time with the club.

A former England youth international, Rushworth has been with the Seagulls since 2019 but is yet to make a senior appearance for them, instead enjoying loan spells with Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea and Hull.

Football Insider reported on Monday (14 July) that Rangers are accelerating in a bid to bring Rushworth to Ibrox on loan for the 2024/25 campaign.

There’s understood to be an urgency for Rangers to complete a deal ahead of their Champions League qualifier against Greek giants Panathinaikos on 22 July.

Jack Butland’s days at Rangers could be numbered

Should Rangers succeed a move for Rushworth, it could bring Butland’s time with the club to an end.

Butland has played 102 times across all competitions for the Glasgow giants since joining from Crystal Palace in 2023, winning a Scottish League Cup title along the way.

However, the nine-time England international’s standards dropped last season, making some high-profile errors and losing his place in the starting line-up as Rangers floundered in the title race against Celtic.

Butland has a contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2027 and Rangers are still likely to attract plenty of suitors in England should they wish to cash in.

Rangers urged to make audacious Jamie Vardy move

Newly-appointed boss Russell Martin has been working hard putting his stamp on the Rangers squad this summer.

Already, the likes of Oscar Cortes, Thelo Aasgaard, Joe Rothwell and Max Aarons have come through the door, and the 55-time Scottish champions don’t look like letting up in the market.

Another striker might be on the menu to add depth to their goalscoring options and former Everton and Aston Villa chief Keith Wyness believes Jamie Vardy might be the best move on a free transfer.

“The thing is, July 22nd is coming around very soon and they’ve got a very big game at Panathinaikos and so he’s got to get that squad together quickly,” he told Football Insider.

“What’s he got now, just over a week? That’s the tough thing with Scottish football, you’re hitting those European qualifiers when everybody’s just getting back off the beach and that’s the really hard thing to do.

“If he can get Vardy in, he’s already got Rothwell in, so there’s something here that Russell is starting to build. Kevin Thelwell knows the market well. So I think together they’re now starting to show that they’re moving, but they’ve got to, with this July 22nd date coming up.
