Sources: Youssef Chermiti ‘concerns’ grow after Rangers transfer update

Rangers are concerned about the performances of Youssef Chermiti despite having no plans to let him leave the club this summer.

Having assessed the striker’s overall performances this season outside of his standout displays, there are concerns about his consistency and impact on the side.

However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, they are aware that a turbulent season at Ibrox has not aided his integration.

Chermiti was signed by former sporting director Kevin Thelwell for former manager Russell Martin, both of whom have been let go from their positions.

His resurgence has largely been thanks to Danny Rohl’s management, and there is a feeling he should be given time ahead of what will be a busy transfer window for Rangers.

Rangers make Youssef Chermiti transfer plan

Football Insider revealed on 6 March that Rangers have no immediate plans to sell Chermiti, but they are keen to see an upturn in his performances.

Reports in Turkey suggested that the Ibrox club turned down an offer for the former Everton striker in the January window, and they are planning to do so again this summer.

Of Chermiti’s nine goals this season, four have come against Celtic and four against Hearts, but any concerns about his consistency have been overruled by promising signs.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Obviously, Chermiti has saved his best for those Old Firm games and the two goals last weekend against Celtic shows what he can offer.

“The concerns have been that he’s been a bit inconsistent and not been a regular goalscorer.

“But Rangers see him as a long-term project. He’s a young player that they’ve put a lot of money into and they’re hoping that he can fulfil his potential at Rangers as well.

“There are no plans to offload him or anything like that.

“I think they are accepting that he’s come into a difficult situation at Rangers, where they found themselves at the start of the season and in his first season at the club.

“They’ll be expecting him to continually progress and improve over the coming weeks and months, and hope he can find some of that consistency in front of goal.

Rangers make new plan to keep Emmanuel Fernandez

Chermiti is not the only player Rangers hope to keep at Ibrox beyond the summer transfer window as they hope to keep Rohl’s squad strong and competitive.

Emmanuel Fernandez has impressed in his debut season at Ibrox but has already gained admirers at Europe’s top clubs, with Arsenal among those being linked.

Football Insider revealed on 20 February that Rangers are desperate to keep Fernandez and hope to deter the growing interest from clubs across Europe.

There is a fear that it may be difficult to keep the centre-back at Ibrox given the high-profile interest in his signature, especially if they are not competing in the Champions League.

However, they remain determined to keep hold of their best players and to strengthen after what has been an impressive turnaround under Rohl’s management.
