Ex-refs chief ‘really disturbed’ by fan behaviour as points deductions mooted after ‘sinister’ Rangers vs Celtic scenes

Rangers and Celtic must be prepared for the worst repercussions after supporters spilt onto the pitch at the full-time whistle.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the authorities could take major action after “sinister” scenes at Ibrox on Sunday, 8 March.

Neither Danny Rohl nor Martin O’Neill’s side could break the deadlock after extra time, with the Hoops finally securing their spot in the Scottish Cup semi-finals after a short penalty shootout.

Rangers’ attention will turn to the Scottish Premiership, but there is expected to be further fallout from the scenes at Ibrox, and Hackett has mooted some of the worst punishments possible.

‘Sinister’ fans deserve to be punished after Rangers vs Celtic

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: “What was really disturbing was that fans recognised that coming onto the pitch is an offence, so they had things over their faces and heads to make sure they’re not seen.

“That has a sinister view, in my opinion. I’m sure the authorities won’t be happy. At the end of the day, one must wonder if games have to be played without fans.

“It’s a difficult one for the authorities. In Europe, they ban the fans or close stands, but that impacts season-ticket holders, who haven’t created any problems.

“There’s got to be an answer. Do we get to a point where games are played behind closed doors? Fines, bans, and closing off the ground. Or do we get to a point where points are deducted, or teams are thrown out of competitions? That’s the dilemma.”

Rohl remains under pressure at Ibrox, though Football Insider understands that he is not under any immediate threat of being sacked.

Keith Hackett gives special mention to Don Robertson

Before speaking about the controversy, Hackett said: “It was a terrific match, and the referee was brilliant. I think Don Robertson had a great game in getting the balance right.

“When we call for former players to become referees, that’s where Don Robertson’s foundations come from. His judgment and participation were quite brilliant. It was the performance of the season.”

Robertson dealt with the heat of the game perfectly, dishing out cautions when he needed to and letting the game flow as many wanted. But as soon as the final whistle was blown, scenes turned sour.
