Angus Kinnear closes on ‘brilliant Everton move’

Everton have seen various changes take place at Goodison Park over the past few months following The Friedkin Group’s (TFG) takeover.

David Moyes has turned the Merseyside giants’ fortunes around on the pitch after returning as manager in January, with his side sitting 15 points above third-bottom Ipswich Town.

Everton have been without a permanent CEO since Denise Barrett-Baxendale’s resignation in the summer of 2023, with Colin Chong taking on the role on an interim basis.

TFG, which is spearheaded by Dan Friedkin, has been looking to appoint a permanent CEO ahead of the club’s move into their new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock from next season.

The Daily Mail reported on 26 February Everton are closing in on a deal for Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear, but he won’t make the move until the end of this season.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider he believes the 47-year-old is a good appointment for the Merseysiders due to his experience in the game.

Kinnear made the move to Elland Road in 2017, having previously spent four years as West Ham’s managing director and a decade with Arsenal as director of marketing, sales and partnerships.

Leeds fans have been celebrating Kinnear’s anticipated exit after he was a key figure under the Championship side’s previous owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Everton wanted to appoint Fulham chief

Borson believes Everton will provide Kinnear with a “brilliant” platform as they look to move forward under TFG.

He told Football Insider: “He’s obviously one of the most experienced football CEOs around.

“He was quite impressive when we saw him in operation on the Amazon documentary, where there was quite a lot of insight into his work. I think he’s got a good reputation and is clearly very experienced within the game.

“We know that they were probably looking for somebody from another Premier League club. They looked quite closely at Alistair Mackintosh at Fulham, but the talk was that he didn’t want to move back to the north.

“IlKinnear moving across to Everton looks like a good hire. I think it’s a brilliant platform for a CEO given where they are.

“If you look at the platform that somebody’s going to come in with next season, they’re definitely staying up, which is great. They have got stability with the management team and the new stadium.

“Most interestingly in some ways is that they have got so many players who are out of contracts that, to an extent because it also brings its own issues, they can go at the new season with a blank piece of paper.

“It’s going to be a very busy summer, but it’s a good opportunity for him.”

Everton to battle for Luis Henrique signing

Everton are set to battle for Luis Henrique’s signature this summer as Moyes looks to add some creativity to his squad for next season.

The 23-year-old winger has registered nine goals and six assists in 25 appearances for Marseille in this campaign, but Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have also registered an interest in his services.

Everton have scored just 30 goals in the Premier League this season – the fourth-lowest record in the top flight.
