Exclusive: Carlisle United make move for Barrow’s Iain Wood

Barrow chief Iain Wood is in the frame to become Carlisle United’s new sporting director, sources have told Football Insider.

League Two strugglers Carlisle are looking to restructure their footballing department by bringing in a new sporting director after recently appointing Mike Williamson as the club’s new manager following the sacking of Paul Simpson.

A number of candidates are understood to have applied for the key recruitment role at Brunton Park.

Wood has impressed at Barrow since taking up the role of sporting director in May 2022 with the club sitting in fourth spot in League Two this season after just missing out on the play-offs last term.

Iain Wood could leave Barrow for Carlisle United

Carlisle face the very real threat of relegation from the English Football League after winning two and losing seven of their opening nine league games, putting them in 22nd.

Not only are they hovering above the League Two relegation zone, but they also have the worst defensive record in the division, conceding 19 goals.

Meanwhile, Barrow are flying high in fourth with five wins, one draw, and three defeats after the same amount of games.

Barrow will be able to concentrate more on the league having recently lost 5-0 to Premier League giants Chelsea in the League Cup at Stamford Bridge.
