Sources: Wycombe Wanderers open talks to sign Plymouth Argyle midfielder Matt Butcher
Wycombe Wanderers have opened talks to sign Plymouth Argyle midfielder Matt Butcher, sources have told Football Insider.
Butcher, 26, is in the final six months of his contract at Plymouth.
League One side Wycombe are hoping to land the former Bournemouth man on a permanent deal before Thursday’s (1 February) deadline.
The defensive midfielder has made 18 appearances in all competitions for Championship side Plymouth so far this season.
But only five of those have come as part of the starting lineup and he could now be tempted by a move away in search of regular first-team action.
Butcher was part of the Plymouth side which won the League One title last season.
He made 48 appearances across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign, notching three goals and two assists.
The Portsmouth-born star has also played at Yeovil, Accrington, Woking, Bournemouth and St Johnstone – with the majority of his appearances coming in League One.
Butcher primarily plays as a defensive midfielder but can also fill in at full-back and centre-back, as well as in more advanced midfield roles.
Wycombe sit 19th in League One and are just four points outside the drop zone.
Meanwhile, Plymouth are 15th in the Championship and have built a healthy eight-point buffer to the bottom three.
