‘Brentford are making a mistake with volatile Keith Andrews – I’ve made some calls’

Brentford are expected to appoint Keith Andrews as their new manager in the coming days after his time as set-piece coach under Thomas Frank.

Andrews is set to replace Frank, who left the Gtech Stadium earlier this month after seven years in charge of the Bees.

The end result of the managerial merry-go-round is that Brentford are expected to promote set-piece coach Andrews to the top job.

He has not yet held the top job anywhere in senior management since retiring from playing at MK Dons in 2015.

However, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed that after “making some calls,” he is not convinced that the 44-year-old is the correct appointment.

‘Brentford’s Andrews appointment is cause for concern’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Andrews doesn’t have the man-management skills of Frank and could be too “volatile” for a club like Brentford.

Wyness added that he has his “concerns” over the quality of the appointment.

Speaking about the Andrews rumours, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s something I’ve really paid a lot of attention to in the last couple of weeks because I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Brentford.

“Thomas Frank has been the constant throughout all their success in many ways. I got to know quite a few Brentford fans. I like them, they’re decent, honest football fans, and they follow the club home and away.

“When Keith Andrews’ name was put in there, I wanted to analyse him a bit further, and I’ve dug out a lot of the videos of him doing interviews and different things. I’ve listened to a lot of talk about him, people who know him. I’ve made a few calls, and I’ve got to say I have my concerns.

“I trust Matthew (Benham) and John Varney at Brentford to make the right call, but I just think there’s something there that isn’t quite the experience of Thomas Frank.

“Frank was successful at Brentford in making that project work because he was a stable influence, he had great man-management skills, and he had great team-building skills, not only with his players in the dressing room, but also behind the scenes.

“I think Andrews is a little bit more volatile, and I don’t think there’s room for that sort of thing in a smaller club like Brentford.”

Mbeumo to Man United update

Man United are pushing hard to sign Bryan Mbeumo and are continuing talks with Brentford “behind closed doors” after submitting a new bid.

That is according to their former chief scout Mick Brown, who claimed that Ruben Amorim’s side are confident a deal will be agreed.

United have submitted a new offer of £60million, including add-ons, that has been rejected, but the club have not been deterred and are pressing forward in talks.
