‘Brentford will sack Keith Andrews after 10 games – there’s no room for his ego’

Brentford have only just appointed Keith Andrews as their new manager, but it has been claimed that he may not even last until Christmas.

It was announced on Tuesday (27 June) that Andrews is replacing Thomas Frank as Bees boss, after the long-serving Dane took over at Tottenham.

The 44-year-old has not yet held the top job anywhere in senior management since retiring from playing at MK Dons in 2015.

The Irishman joined Brentford last year as their set-piece coach and has now been trusted to make the step up into the managerial position.

However, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – doesn’t believe that Andrews has the necessary experience to be a success in West London.

‘Andrews lacks experience for Brentford’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insists that if Andrews starts poorly at Brentford, then he will struggle to persevere and turn the ship around, unlike his predecessor.

When Frank took charge of the Bees in 2018, he lost eight of his first ten games in charge, before then going on a seven-match unbeaten run.

Wyness added that Andrews’ lack of prior managing experience will be exacerbated at a club like Brentford.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’ve just got concerns that the pressure could tell on him quickly and it won’t be handled in quite the same way as Thomas Frank did.

“If you remember when Frank started, he lost eight out of his first 10 games. Frank fought through that early adversity, carried on persevering, and doing it but I think if that was to happen to Andrews, we’d see a different situation

“I just don’t see him having the experience of managing, and I think that experience is so crucial in a smaller club like Brentford, where you’re part of a much smaller group of decision makers and there’s just no room for egos, volatility.

“I hope I’m wrong and I do have a lot of trust in Matthew Benham and John Varney to make the right decision but I’m just saying that’s the red flag in my mind and if I were a chief executive again, I would have been thinking differently about appointing him as the manager.

“He’s part of the family at Brentford, I understand that. He knows everybody and they’ve had a chance to review much more than I have, so I take that point on board. However, it’s just something in my gut feeling and my experience of having been in football and hired managers.”

Mbeumo to Man United update

Man United are pushing hard to sign Bryan Mbeumo and are continuing talks with Brentford “behind closed doors” after submitting a new bid.

That is according to their former chief scout Mick Brown, who claimed that Ruben Amorim’s side are confident a deal will be agreed.

United have submitted a new offer of £60million, including add-ons, that has been rejected, but the club have not been deterred and are pressing forward in talks.
