Marcus Rashford, Ollie Watkins react to departure message from Aston Villa’s Onana

Marcus Rashford and Ollie Watkins reacted to a message from Aston Villa ace Amadou Onana on social media.

The Belgian midfielder joined the Villains last summer from Everton and featured 34 times in his maiden season at Villa Park.

Despite impressing at times, Onana struggled to break through the established partnership of Saudi Pro League target Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara.

The former Lille man started just 20 Premier League games and struggled to replicate his form from his time at Everton in seasons prior.

As a result, sources told Football Insider that Villa were considering selling Onana, largely relating to their need to be compliant with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

However, with Unai Emery‘s side having passed the league’s financial rules without needing to sell the midfielder, the 23-year-old’s future remains up in the air.

Amadou Onana shares message as Aston Villa depart for USA

Villa are heading off to the USA for their pre-season tour, and Onana shared two images of himself on Instagram, captioned: “Off we go”.

The post was liked by Barcelona’s new signing Rashford and Watkins, showing their support for the Belgium international.

Aston Villa face difficult summer window

Football Insider Verdict

Whilst the Midlands club have survived the PSR test that was facing them this summer, they are not out of the woods just yet.

Villa were slapped with a fine by UEFA, and three years of further potential sanctions if they continue to fail to comply with the governing body’s financial rules.

As a consequence, the club will struggle to recruit significantly this summer unless major sales happen.

Ollie Watkins and Jacob Ramsey have been linked with a move away from Villa, and several players on the outskirts of the starting XI, including Onana, may also depart.

However, whilst the sales of players like Ramsey are useful for PSR, they do not help lower their squad cost ratio, which is a requirement from UEFA, making it very difficult for the club to recruit expensive players.
