Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa: Stefan Borson drops verdict on permanent deal
Marcus Rashford remains unsure where his future will lie beyond this season despite impressing during his loan spell at Aston Villa.
The England international made the temporary switch to Villa Park from Manchester United in January, with a £40million option-to-buy clause included in the deal.
The 27-year-old has registered three goals and six assists for Villa, helping them reach the Champions League quarter-finals and put themselves into the mix to qualify for the competition again this season.
Speaking about the possibility of triggering Rashford’s option-to-buy clause, Unai Emery admitted on 15 April it’s “difficult to plan it now” and it “depends on the circumstances and what happens in the next weeks”.
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the decision is likely more dependent on Villa qualifying for the Champions League as opposed to their profit and sustainability (PSR) position.
Borson previously told Football Insider Villa landed around £100million from the Champions League before they were knocked out by PSG in the quarter-finals.
Emery’s side are currently just one point behind fifth-place Man City, who they play on Tuesday (22 April), with five Champions League spots on offer to top-flight clubs this season.

Aston Villa handed PSR boost in Marcus Rashford pursuit
Borson insisted signing Rashford will not change Villa’s PSR position this season after they have been close to the spending limit in recent years.
He told Football Insider: “It would be interesting to see what the date is on the option.
“It’s probably 30 June, so they’ll be able to make a decision right at the end. The thing is, rather than PSR, it’s probably more dependent on Champions League qualification.
“Because if you do the maths on the incremental cost of Rashford in this season, the point is it makes no difference.
“If you buy Rashford on 30 June, it doesn’t impact your PSR position for this season at all because all of the amortisation is next season.
“They have already got to pay his wages, whatever that proportion is. They have already got to pay that for this particular PSR season, so their PSR impact is for next season.
“Of course, the PSR impact for next season will be dependent on the Champions League.
“It will just make a very material difference to their calculation and to what the numbers look like, with the profits and everything else.”

Liverpool turn attention to Aston Villa star
Football Insider revealed on 18 April Liverpool have turned their attention towards Ollie Watkins after his minutes have reduced at Villa.
Rashford’s future is key to Watkins potentially pushing for a summer move away from Villa Park.
Stats | Watkins | Rashford |
Appearances | 48 | 16 |
Goals | 16 | 3 |
Assists | 13 | 6 |
It is believed the door could open for the long-serving Villa striker to depart should they sign Rashford on a permanent basis from Man United this summer.
Watkins has registered 16 goals and 13 assists in 48 appearances this season.
