‘Outrageous’ – Steven Thompson in awe of what he saw ‘quality’ Rangers star do vs Ferencvaros

Danny Rohl would have been buzzing as Rangers took an unlikely lead against Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday.

There were fears that Rangers’ clash in Hungary could have been postponed, but the away supporters were in fine voice, especially as Bojan Miovski nudged them ahead at the Groupama Arena.

Miovski has struggled at Ibrox so far this season, but with Youssef Chermiti dropped to the bench for their European adventure, Rohl had no other option but to trust the North Macedonian international.

Within 27 minutes, the 26-year-old already had the ball in the back of the net, albeit under controversial circumstances – a VAR check for offside – but Ferencvaros were right back into the game before half-time.

Bence Otvos netted just before the break, with the home side eventually finding a winner, but that did not take away from the Gers’ early success.

Speaking live on BBC Sportsound (11 December, 6:15pm), Steven Thompson said: “It looked tight. It’s absolute quality from Bojan Miovski – an outrageous finish.

“It’s the first time really that Rangers have had a shot at goal, but what a goal,” as the Light Blues took an unlikely lead at the Groupama Arena in a tight Europa League affair.

It was only the striker’s fourth goal since returning to the Scottish Premiership, having left Aberdeen in 2024 for Girona, where he failed to make it in Spain.

Rohl’s start to life in Scotland has been just as difficult, with all eyes on the manager after some failed appointments, but there were some hugely positive signs in Hungary.

Is Youssef Chermiti’s spot in the team now at risk?

James McFadden certainly seems to think that the starting XI spot is “Miovski’s to lose” [BBC Sport], putting pressure on his striker partner to prove himself whenever he is given the opportunity.

He netted twice against Kilmarnock at the weekend, but after 16 games, Chermiti has just one goal to his name, which he bagged against the same opponents back in October.

However, given the amount of money spent on the former Everton man, those behind the scenes will be hoping for the player to be unlocked by the new manager. Fingers crossed.

The majority of supporters were absolutely baffled by the money spent during the summer, especially given his lack of experience, but they will need to get behind him if he is to succeed at Ibrox.
