Sources: Tottenham target Stefan de Vrij close to agreeing deal after extensive Conte talks

Stefan de Vrij is close to agreeing a new Inter Milan deal despite extensive talks with Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, sources have told Football Insider.

Spurs and Atletico Madrid have been among the multiple clubs who have enquired about signing the defender, whose contract is due to expire in the summer.

But De Vrij, who turned 31 last month, is in advanced talks over a two-year extension to his Inter deal even though he is not a regular starter at the moment.

The Holland international is expected to stay at the Italian giants, where he has spent the last five years.

The highlight of the spell was the 2020-21 title winning campaign under Conte, with whom De Vrij had and still has an excellent relationship.

The two have spoken about the Dutchman joining Conte in north London and playing in the manager’s favoured three-man defensive system.

A reunion at Spurs is now off the cards as Inter look to secure his future on a two-year extension until 2025 with the option of a further 12 months.

Conte has long been a huge admirer of De Vrij and was keen to lure him to Spurs in the three previous windows, particularly January 2022.

But the Italian giants would not sell mid-season and Tottenham went on to sign Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona last summer.

That deal has not been a huge success and it is expected that Lenglet will return to Barca in the summer.

De Vrij has made 14 Serie A starts among 22 appearances in all competitions for Inter this season and has 187 times for the club in total.
