Stefan Borson: This is how much Man City ‘saved’ after finalising Marc Guehi deal
Marc Guehi completed a move to Manchester City despite receiving interest from several other top clubs.
Man City signed Guehi in a £20million deal from Crystal Palace, where his contract was due to expire on 30 June.
There was an expectation Guehi would remain at Selhurst Park until the summer before Pep Guardiola’s side presented him with an offer he couldn’t refuse.
The 25-year-old has signed a contract until 2031, with The Athletic reporting his wages are lower than the £300,000-a-week that has been reported elsewhere.
Guehi made his debut at the Etihad Stadium in Man City’s 2-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday (24 January).
How much Marc Guehi is worth to Man City
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Guehi would be worth around £65m if he hadn’t been out of contract with Palace this summer.
Newcastle United previously made a bid in that region for the England international, but they were unable to get a deal over the line.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “We actually know the approximate value of Guehi from the deal that almost happened with Newcastle in the summer of 2024.
“The negotiation was £65m, and that was on the table. There’s a good mark as to what he was worth at that point.

“I don’t think he’s gone down in value in terms of market value as to what he would be worth if you took the contract situation out of the way. He’s definitely worth between £65m and let’s say £80m if he had no contractual release.”
Why Man City have saved money on Guehi deal
Borson insisted Man City have saved around £45m on Guehi due to his contract situation.
“He’s 25, one of the best defenders in the Premier League and an England starter,” said Borson.
“Let’s say he’s worth £65m, City bought him in for £20m, apparently there aren’t actually any add-ons of note aside from the sell-on profit.

“I mean, obviously again there’s all sorts of debate as to what the terms are, but a very reliable City correspondent said it is £20m, so City have saved let’s say £45m.”
Guehi’s next outing will come against Tottenham on 1 February as he’s unable to feature in the Champions League until the knock-out rounds, with Man City taking on Galatasaray on Wednesday (28 January).
