‘They got lucky’ – Stefan Borson responds to West Ham loan update

West Ham have taken out a loan as they look to boost their financial position at the London Stadium.

West Ham have been fairly limited in the transfer market, having spent around £70million on the signings of Jean-Clair Todibo, El Hadji Malick Diouf and Mads Hermansen.

Meanwhile, Callum Wilson and Kyle Walker-Peters have both joined the Hammers on free transfers.

It comes despite West Ham raking in £55million for Mohammed Kudus after he signed for Tottenham earlier this summer.

West Ham ‘concerns’ addressed after financial reveal

This article contains exclusive comment from Stefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City.

Official documents submitted to Companies House on 14 August revealed West Ham have borrowed money from Rights and Media Funding Limited.

Keith Wyness told Football Insider he is “concerned” for the Hammers following the move as the Cheshire-based company was previously a lender to Everton, where he was formerly CEO.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “There isn’t really any concern.

“They’re a secured football lender, who are making their money by taking a commercial margin from a credit perspective.

“They weren’t massively involved in Everton in a negative way. I mean, they were a secured lender to Everton, took a bit of risk and got paid for it, and they had risk in that situation.

“I think in some ways they got quite lucky to get made whole in the sale. They held a lot of the cards because of their security, what they effectively had mortgaged.

“With West Ham, nobody should read anything into that. It shouldn’t be confused, for example, with oh, here’s 777 again. There’s nothing like that.

“These guys are just a private wealth lender and are being paid for the potential risk of lending to a football club.”

West Ham in discussions about signing Arsenal star

In terms of a potential incoming, former London Stadium scout Mick Brown told Football Insider West Ham have spoken to Fabio Vieira’s agent about the possibility of a move to east London.

However, while he remains a name on their list and could become an option should they miss out on other targets, it is unlikely they will make a move at this stage.

Bundesliga side Stuttgart are believed to be working on a deal to sign the attacking midfielder as Mikel Arteta plans to move him on this summer.
