Wilder explodes in foul-mouthed reaction to Sheffield Utd v Bristol City controversy

Chris Wilder did not hold back when delivering an expletive-filled tirade after a controversial refereeing decision in Sheffield United’s playoff semi-final against Bristol City.

The Blades were forced to watch on as Leeds claimed the Championship title, and Burnley tied up promotion.

United were consigned to the infamous battle that is the playoffs, and whilst there has never been a larger point gap between third and sixth in the history of the knockout format, the Robins have proven themselves a dangerous side this season.

The Blades’ boss has a reputation for his fiery personality, and it was on show in Sheffield United’s loss to Burnley in April.

Tyrese Campbell opener disallowed vs Bristol City

With just ten minutes gone, a long throw was sent into City’s box by Jack Robinson, which found it’s way to striker Tyrese Campbell.

The former Stoke striker was alert and latched on to the loose ball, heading past goalkeeper Max O’Leary and into the back of the net.

However, following a delay, referee Oliver Langford then disallowed the goal, following a tight offside decision.

The replays justified the referee and linesman’s call, as Sydie Peck had blocked Jason Knight from being able to clear the ball off the goal-line.

But that did little to quell the expletive-filled explosion from Wilder on the side-lines, who gave the fourth official an earful before directing some choice words onto the pitch.

Referee at the centre of the action as Sheffield United awarded controversial penalty

Football Insider Verdict

If there is one thing you don’t want in a football match, especially one with the magnitude of United’s meeting with City, it is for the referee to be the main talking point.

As Kieffer Moore broke through on goal, Rob Dickie managed to wrap his leg around the Welsh striker, poking the ball away before bringing him down.

The Scottish defender has cleared the ball away with a brilliant tackle and been punished for doing so.

As such, City’s slim chance of making it to the Premier League is gone, and although it is a tired argument, the need for VAR in England’s second tier is only exacerbated with moments like these.
