Willy Gnonto sends heartfelt message to Joel Piroe after Leeds exit rumours

Willy Gnonto thanked his Leeds teammate Joel Piroe on social media as his future at Elland Road remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Leeds find themselves just a win away from winning the Championship after a comfortable 4-0 win over Bristol City on Monday night (28 April).

Having suffered a late-season stumble, the Whites composed themselves, have since won five in a row and are unbeaten in nine games overall.

However, that may not be enough for Daniel Farke to keep his job as manager, with Leeds reportedly shopping around for a replacement due to his poor track record in England’s top-flight.

Following the win against the Robins, Piroe shared several photos on Instagram, captioned: “Top football, top win, top of the league”.

The Dutchman’s teammate Gnonto commented: “Thank you brother” on the post, showing support for the Championship’s top-scorer.

Gnonto was the subject of “concrete” interest from Saudi Pro League clubs in January, but a deal failed to materialise, having repeatedly been linked to Everton since the previous relegation.

Farke was keen to keep his talented young forward, but the former Inter Milan man has failed to cement his place in the German’s starting XI since.

With interest from Saudi Arabia and several Premier League clubs, Gnonto may look for assurances over his starting time next season and if that fails to bear fruit, the 21-year-old could push for an exit.

Despite being on course to secure the Championship’s golden boot, Leeds may look to move on from Piroe this summer.

The striker has scored 19 goals this season but there are concerns the Dutchman may struggle to make the grade as a Premier League striker.

Either way, he has ultimately done his job at this level with promotion secured, having netted four in the 6-0 hammering of Stoke City on 21 April.
