Lucas Paqueta in line for huge FA payout as legal battle takes new twist

West Ham star Lucas Paqueta could be in line for a huge payout after his legal battle with the FA has taken a new twist.

It was confirmed in July Paqueta has been cleared of the spot-fixing charges after an independent regulatory commission found them to be “not proven” following a hearing between March and May this year.

The 28-year-old was accused of picking up four bookings for the purpose of financial gain after being charged by the governing body in May 2024.

The FA announced on Wednesday (3 September) it will not be appealing the verdict after the written reasons for the commission’s decision have been published.

However, Paqueta will receive a sanction after two counts of failing to co-operate with the investigation were proven, but that is only expected to lead to a fine.

Lucas Paqueta could sue the FA after new reveal

The commission’s judgement revealed it found aspects of the FA’s case against Paqueta “surprising” and “concerning”.

Meanwhile, the panel called into question the governing body’s decision to not seek independent expertise on betting data.

Finance expert Dan Plumley told Football Insider Paqueta would be able to sue the FA after being cleared of his spot-fixing charges.

That could now turn out to be the case after The Times reported on Wednesday Paqueta and West Ham are considering legal action against the FA for damages over his collapsed move to Manchester City.

The newspaper said the claim could run to tens of millions of pounds after the Brazil international was proven not guilty.

Paqueta was close to joining Man City for £80million in the summer of 2023, but the move collapsed after news emerged of the FA’s investigation.

A decision will now also be made over whether the FA will cover the midfielder’s legal fees, which are believed to be in excess of £1million.

West Ham make Lucas Paqueta transfer decision

Paqueta was linked with Man City again this summer after being cleared of the charges.

However, the Brazilian remained at the London Stadium after Graham Potter made it clear he’s an integral member of his side.

Paqueta scored from the penalty spot in the Hammers’ 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday (31 August).
