Man City’s ‘top priority’ January signing revealed – sources

Man City will look to sign a new central midfielder as a top priority in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that another injury blow in the middle of the park would force the club to bring in at least one new signing amid a growing crisis.

This comes after Rodri, 28, suffered a serious knee injury during their 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad in a huge blow to Pep Guardiola’s side.

It is said that, while Mateo Kovacic has done well at filling in for the star man in their midfield, there is a growing feeling that he is not the right man to start every week.

On top of the blow to Rodri, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Oscar Bobb have also been ruled out, leaving the boss with a weakened squad.

As a result, they will turn their attention towards the transfer market as they have already begun drawing up a list of potential additions to their side.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown previously told Football Insider that they were already aware of their options prior to the Spaniard’s injury.

Man City top priority named ahead of January transfer window

Man City’s 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP in the Champions League has seen them lose three games in a row for the first time since April 2018.

This has set off alarm bells within their transfer team, who are scouring the market to find potential replacements and improvement on their injured stars and depth options.

While the likes of Kovacic have turned in impressive performances, there is a growing feeling that they will not be capable of keeping City at their usual level.

Guardiola’s squad is blessed with some of the strongest depth in the Premier League, but the boss has expressed concerns about the severity of their injuries.

“We know we will struggle and we have to accept that, and it is fine,” he told Sky Sports following the Champions League defeat.

“The games will be difficult; in previous seasons it was smooth. Personal reasons, injuries, we won six Premier Leagues in seven years. Things change, we have to accept that.”

Rodri during the warm-up for Man City

Now, City are plotting to ease those difficulties by entering the transfer market with a clear priority in mind as Rodri’s absence remains the killer blow.
