Jurgen Klopp discusses future of Liverpool underperformer
By Danny Wright
Jurgen Klopp is looking for a reaction from goalkeeper Simon Mignolet after the goalkeeper made mistakes in his last two games.
The Liverpool underperformer dropped the ball under pressure which led to Hull City’s Alfred N’Diaye opening the scoring in Saturday’s 2-0 loss.
That mistake came after being caught out by David Luiz’s quick free-kick in last Tuesday’s draw with Chelsea.
Klopp told the Liverpool Echo that he is looking for Mignolet to pay attention to his mistakes and learn from them.
“We have to show a reaction. That’s how it is. We are causing (ourselves) problems,” Klopp said.
“For sure, he was not alone around the goal, but he had it nearly in his hands, so he cannot ignore this.”
Klopp also spoke how the concentration of the entire team is also putting results at risk to the team.
He added: “It’s all about concentration, it’s all about being really in the game and finding the answer now after a defeat which really hurts, not only myself but the players too.
“Putting ourselves under pressure is kind of a hobby right now and we have to show the reaction, but I cannot show it here now.”
The Liverpool boss has had a huge headache with his goalkeepers this season, with summer signing Loris Karius coming under great scrutiny from the Liverpool fans.
The German keeper was dropped from the first team after a run of bad performances, only keeping three clean sheets in 10 games this season, before Mignolet regained his starting position.
However, he too has struggled to stop the opposition from scoring and he has three clean sheets in 14 Premier League appearances.
Although the problem runs a lot deeper and the whole defence are culpable for leaking goals, it is ultimately the man in between the sticks who faces the fiercest criticism.
Liverpool have conceded 30 goals in the Premier League this season, more than the likes of West Bromwich Albion and relegation candidates Middlesbrough, who are both known for their sturdy defence.
