Football Insider analyses three talking points from Celtic’s 1-1 draw with Partick at Parkhead on Wednesday night.
Brendan Rodgers must sign 20-year-old
Although it wasn’t his best day in front of goal, Rodgers has to try and secure a permanent deal for Patrick Roberts. The versatile attacker was the focal point of Celtic’s offensive play against Partick and showed that he has the hunger to get forward and try to score. Roberts doesn’t look like he has a future at his parent club Manchester City and after impressing in 38 games this season, it would be criminal for the Bhoys to not at least table a bid. He’s only started 13 matches and if players like Moussa Dembele leave in the summer then there should be an extra slot availabale in the starting XI – as well as bit of cash to play around with.
Unbeaten season won’t happen with these team selections
With the league title in the bag it made sense for Rodgers to mix up his team selection against Partick, but it almost backfired. Other than the treble, all the Hoops have to aim for is to finish the season unbeaten and to do that they must not let complacency creep in. It’s understandable to make five changes tonight after just two days off following the win at Hearts, but a potential banana skin lies in wait if they take their eye off the ball. Dundee almost got the better of Celtic a few weeks ago – and that was a pretty much full-strength side.
Without Dembele, Celtic are average
After the 5-0 win against Hearts, you would have expected the Hoops to breeze past Partick. However that was far from the case and being without Moussa Dembele on Wednesday proved that their attack doesn’t amount to anything without him. The 20-year-old is the hottest property in Scottish football for good reason and Patrick Roberts and Callum McGregor’s lack of cutting edge highlight how dependant they are on the Frenchman. Scott Sinclair can always step up but he can only do so much on his own. The Bhoys won’t replace Dembele with someone as good as him in the summer, should he leave, so they need to adapt to life without him quickly because at the moment they look average.
