Arsenal face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool in the pursuit of Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to a recent report.

Sportbild has revealed that north London manager Arsene Wenger has been keeping close tabs on the 22-year-old for the past few months and has been impressed by his performance for both Schalke and Germany.

The German media outlet reports that the Gunners’ manager is keen to secure the young attacker and bring him to the Emirates this summer.

It is said that Goretzka has not accompanied the Bundesliga squad to China as he is currently resting following his participation in the Confederations Cup.

The report details that Manchester City and Liverpool are both interested in the star following his recent displays on the pitch.

According to Sportsbild, Gorentza is also refusing to sign a new deal with his current club.

However, the battle to sign the dazzling playmaker could prove difficult as his manager says he won’t sell the 22-year-old.

Football Insider verdict

Goreztka would be a fantastic addition to the Arsenal squad as the 22-year-old has displayed his fantastic talent since joining the Bundesliga outfit. Since joining in 2013 the German has made a total of 118 appearances for the club, where he scored 15 goals and provided 12 assists. However, it could prove difficult to entice the youngster to the Emirates over City or Anfield as Arsenal won’t be able to persuade Goretzka with the promise of Champions League football, which could sway the eager playmaker. Wenger shouldn’t focus on the Schalke midfielder too much though, and instead should turn his attention to recruiting strong and experienced centre-backs to replace and provide an alternative to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. Defenders are much more of a priority over a central midfielder this summer.
