Leeds United goalkeeper Marco Silvestri has left the club’s training camp in Austria ahead of a potential switch back to Serie A, according to a recent report.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has revealed that the 26-year-old left the club’s pre-season camp on Wednesday to fly to Italy to discuss a deal with Hellas Verona.

The regional newspaper claims that the stopper is on the verge of a departure from Elland Road and his swift exit from the club’s pre-season training is a suggestion that a transfer is nearing.

It is said that Leeds are working to finalise the deal with Verona within the next 24 hours.

Silvestri is keen on a move away from the Championship club after slipping down dramatically in new boss Thomas Christiansen’s goalkeeping order after the manager signed new keeper Felix Wiedwald from Werder Bremen.

The former Italy Under 21 international moved to Elland Road from Chievo Verona in 2014 for £425,000 and was the club’s go-to keeper in his first two seasons.

However, the Italian lost his place to experienced stopper Rob Green last season, and is expected to be further down the pecking order with the addition of Wiedwald.

Throughout his time at the club the keeper has featured in a total of 98 games across all competitions and has kept 23 clean sheets for the Whites.

Silvestri’s decision to leave the club this summer is a wise one if he is looking to play regular first-team football. It’s undeniable that the Italian will be Christiansen’s third-choice next season, and with the new arrivals now is a better time than ever. The 26-year-old made a vital contribution during his time at Elland Road, and it would also be beneficial to United to sell up now rather than risk losing the keeper for free next summer when his contract expires. Although Silvestri has been a valued member of the squad it’s doubtful that he will be missed too much as the boss has made a total of ten signings so far during the transfer window.
