Smith: This is what fans must not do when Rangers appoint manager
Former Aberdeen boss Alex Smith hopes that fans of the Pittodrie side do not lash out at Derek McInnes if the manager leaves them to join Rangers.
McInnes has been linked with a move to Ibrox since the departure of Pedro Caixinha in October, and has long been considered the odds-on favourite for the job.
The scenario was complicated by Rangers and Aberdeen meeting in a league double-header, with both games being won by the Gers under interim manager Graeme Murty.
The first game at Ibrox saw the Gers win emphatically 3-0 whilst a narrow 2-1 win in the second game saw them leapfrog Aberdeen into second place in the Scottish Premiership table.
Now the Daily Record is reporting that the Ibrox side will make their move for McInnes imminently, and Smith believes that McInnes “deserves to be appreciated” for the job he done at Pittodrie.
“The link with Rangers has been constant…if Derek is offered the job and accepts it I hope the fans don’t turn against him” Smith said, as quoted by the Press and Journal.

He added: “Derek doesn’t deserve that…he may go and if he does his work for the club deserves to be appreciated.
“He has been nothing but professional and committed in his time at the club.”
McInnes has won one trophy in his four seasons with Aberdeen and has finished runner-up to Celtic in the last three league seasons.
The Gers’ next match is against Ross County at Ibrox on Saturday, it remains to be seen who is in charge for the game but it wouldn’t be surprising if it was McInnes.
