Senior player must be axed, Celtic rising star the answer to Rodgers woes
COMMENT
In the aftermath of Celtic’s 4-0 defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday, players from almost every position of the park have been slaughtered by supporters.
Goalkeeper Craig Gordon was roundly criticised, but the area where most of the blame has been placed is at centre-back, where Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic’s poor run of form continued.
The senior pair were unable to cope with the physicality of Hearts, with Simunovic in particular turning in a disastrous performance.
As Brendan Rodgers’ side have four games to negotiate before the January winter break and opening of the transfer window, a solution to the Hoops’ defensive problems could be found in Kristoffer Ajer.
The 19-year-old Norwegian rising star played in the recent 3-1 victory over Hamilton at Celtic Park and turned in a good performance.
He seems to have a calmness to his style of play which his more experienced team-mates – particularly Boyata – can only be envious of after a shambolic run of form.
Senior player Boyata has been horrific and must be axed from his seemingly invincible spot in the first-team.
For such a young player, Ajer has plenty of Scottish Premiership experience, having spent last season on-loan at Kilmarnock.
With the Celts having two huge games in the Scottish Premiership against Aberdeen and Rangers before the winter break, now seems like the perfect time to put Ajer into the side and see if he has what it takes to become a first-team regular.
