20-year-old Tottenham star reveals frustrations and verdict on summer loan move

By Matt Farr

Tottenham wonderkid Harry Winks has admitted that his rise to fame at White Hart Lane was stressful and frustrating, after he was told he couldn’t go out on loan in the summer.

It all worked out well though and it has been nothing short of a dramatic rise for the 20-year-old midfielder, who only made his Premier League bow at the start of the current campaign.

Raised through the ranks at the north London club, Winks – who is also a lifelong Spurs fan – has held no other goal in life than to play football for Tottenham.

The England U21 international has made 22 appearances for the club in all competitions this season, scoring one goal.

However, talking in the Guardian, he admitted that he found it frustrating waiting in the wings to make his first-team debut, having often trained with the squad and been included as a substitute, only to look on as others did the job he wanted to do.

Mauricio Pochettino even denied him the opportunity to leave the club on loan, instead keeping him at Tottenham in a bid to ease him into the senior setup.

However, Winks looks to have been rewarded for his patience, and he looks set to have a very bright future with Tottenham and in the Premier League.

He told the Guardian: “I’ll be honest, last summer was very stressful. Because you’re 20-years-old and you’ve only played three times and never started.

“You can see other boys who are playing regularly in the Premier League or the Championship.

“I got told I wasn’t allowed to go on loan, which was a good thing but, at the same time, I just wanted to play matches.”

Winks is likely to make his return to the starting XI when Tottenham take on Wycombe in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

He has appeared only as a substitute in Tottenham’s last five Premier League games, but has experienced every minute of Spurs’ domestic cup games this term.

In other Tottenham news, Mauricio Pochettino has hailed this Spurs player for his performances this season, but has demanded even more.
