Celtic seem to be in a bit of a quandary about the right-back position at the club. There are three players who can play in that position – Mikael Lustig, Anthony Ralston, and Cristian Gamboa – but none seem to convince, for a variety of reasons.
One player who fits the bill as a right-back though, and one who Brendan Rodgers should be aiming to sign in the summer is Cardiff’s 23-year-old Scottish international Callum Paterson.
Paterson, who recently made his seventh appearance for Scotland in the 1-0 win over Hungary, has been a revelation for Cardiff this season, as they aim for an unlikely promotion to the Premier League – they currently sit second in the Championship.
The defender has scored nine goals in 28 appearances for the Bluebirds, which is a superb return for a player who has played most of the season in defence.
Perhaps the only thing that would stop Rodgers from making a move for Paterson would be if Cardiff get promoted to the Premier League this season, but if they fail to achieve that goal the Hoops should be first in line to bring the former Hearts man back to Scotland.
Paterson could be a mainstay of the Hoops side for years to come, and if there is any chance the Hoops can get a deal done it would be a real statement of intent.
