23-year-old worst player of the season: Three things we learned from Aston Villa draw v Brighton

By Amir Mir

Football Insider analyses the three talking points after Aston Villa recorded a 1-1 draw against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

Clear out needed in the summer

There is no doubt that Steve Bruce needs to clear out the deadwood at the club in the summer. There are a number of players out on loan and those that didn’t feature in the squad that faced Brighton need to be sold. However, from those that came up against Chris Hughton’s team, Jordan Amavi, Leandro Bacuna, Micah Richards and Tommy Elphick need to be sold and shown the exit door in the summer.

James Chester is player of the season

Midfield powerhouse Mile Jedinak runs Chester close as does the injured Jonathan Kodjia, but Chester deserves to be named the player of the season. He has been the most consistent and reliable player at the back and he will play a massive part in Villa’s promotion push next term. Chester’s lack of mistakes, reading of the game and calmness at the back, has been very crucial for a Villa side that has struggled this term.

Amavi worst player of the season

The 23-year-old started the season with big expectations and many supporters wanting him to stay at the club after speculation regarding his future. In the summer, he had just returned from a long-term injury and fans were eager to see what he could produce. However, he has been a huge disappointment, proving he is too weak to defend, which has seen January signing Neil Taylor take his place in the side. From the Villa players that have played regularly, he has been the worst player this season and it won’t be a surprise to see him leave in the summer.
