Liverpool player ratings v Manchester City: 24-year-old is 5/10
By Danny Wright
Football Insider rates the Liverpool players for their performances in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Eithad Stadium on Sunday.
Simon Mignolet 6 – Man City looked to expose the goalkeeper with some low drives across the box but he resisted and made some strong saves. He couldn’t do a lot about the goal but failed to replicate his good start to the game in the second half.
Nathaniel Clyne 6 – The home side attacked the wings throughout the game and Clyne had a tough time dealing with the pace and skill of Leroy Sane on the right side of the defence. However he didn’t do a lot wrong throughout the 90 minutes.
Joel Matip 7 – The Cameroon international looked threatening to Pep Guardiola’s side from set-pieces and had a couple of decent chances to score. At the other end of the pitch he did well to deny Sergio Aguero of a number of chances and City would have perhaps won the game if it weren’t for him.
Ragnar Klavan 5 – Really struggled to keep up with the City attack and was often found out of position. He was massively helped out by strong performances from Matip and Emre Can. Completely lost Ageuro for his goal.
James Milner 6 – Was clearly targeted at left-back by his former club and Aguero’s goal came from a cross on his side of the pitch. Made important clearances in the first half but looked more assured going forward and took his penalty kick well to open the scoring.
Emre Can 8 – Looked overwhelmed by the home side in the early stages but as the game progressed he settled down and became a very important figure in the centre of the pitch for Liverpool. Easily his side’s man of the match.
Georginio Wijnaldum 6 – Brilliant skill and strength on the ball and was unlucky to not win a penalty in the first half. He pulled the strings when Liverpool attacked in the first half but looked tired and frustrated after the break.
Adam Lallana 5 – The ex-Saints winger didn’t have much luck on Sunday and had a quiet game despite forcing a good save from the City keeper. He fluffed what was perhaps the biggest miss of the whole season.
Sadio Mane 6 – Should have done better with a couple of chances. Nicolas Otamendi equal to him for most of the game and fans will expect more from him in upcoming fixtures.
Philippe Coutinho 5 – It was a quiet game for the 24-year-old as he struggled to make much of an impact against Sunday’s opposition. He’s been off the boil for some time for Liverpool now and will have to sort his form out ahead of what will be an important few fixtures for his side.
Roberto Firmino 6 – Forced a brilliant save from Willy Caballero just before the break and did well to earn his side a penalty. He had a good match and attacked well but he has to be more clinical in front of goal.
