Alderweireld makes admission ahead of Tottenham clash against Arsenal

By Matt Bullin

Tottenham centre back Toby Alderweireld has claimed that his side do not need the extra motivation provided by the title race when they take on Arsenal this Sunday.

Spurs welcome the Gunners to White Hart Lane on Sunday as both sides look to finish the season strong.

Both sides need the all important three points for differing reasons, as Tottenham look to chase down Chelsea at the top of the league, while Arsenal look to continue their late push for a top four finish.

Last time out Spurs battled to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Christian Eriksen’s 30 yard strike was enough to be the difference between the sides, and hand Mauricio Pochettino’s side an all-important three points.

Speaking in The Mirror, Alderweireld said of the upcoming North London derby: “It is a massive game at the Lane. It is going to be a special day and it is up to us to get three points.

“Beating Arsenal to finish above them is extra motivation but you do not need extra motivation on Sunday.”

Despite suffering with injuries for part of the season the 28-year-old, has been a mainstay of Spurs’ defence and has made 34 appearances in all competitions.

The 67-time Belgium international has struck up a solid partnership with his fellow countryman, Jan Vertonghen, this season, and both of them will need to be on form if Spurs are to get a result v Arsenal this Sunday.
