Pundit swipes at Granit Xhaka after Arsenal latest - 'he's so temperamental'

Noel Whelan has hailed Granit Xhaka for “stepping up to the mark” with a “mature performance” as Arsenal defeated Brentford on Sunday (18 September).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 29-year-old must now overcome the “frustrating” and “temperamental” side of his game in order to become a fan’s favourite again.

Xhaka claimed his third assist of the season when he provided an inch-perfect cross for Gabriel Jesus to head home during the 3-0 defeat of Brentford on Sunday (18 September).

The midfield star has been unleashed in a more advanced position by manager Mikel Arteta this term, with Arsenal sitting top of the Premier League after seven games.

Xhaka, a 104-cap Switzerland international, is under contract until June 2024.

He captained the side during the 2019-20 season but was stripped of the role by Unai Emery after a heated moment between player and fans at the Emirates Stadium.

Whelan insisted everyone will “forget about the bad stuff” if he can maintain his current performance levels.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He stepped up to the mark on Sunday.

“Especially when you’re missing a player like Odegaard in the midfield area with his leadership and quality.

“It was a really mature performance from Xhaka.

“He was always involved on the ball, and the cross for Jesus’ goal was absolutely brilliant.

“Now we’ve got to see that consistency in his game across a whole season. That’s what frustrates people about Xhaka – he can be very temperamental.

“It’s been a bit of a turbulent time for him at Arsenal, but when he puts performances in like that – everyone forgets about the bad stuff.

“He shone on Sunday and set the example, and that’s what Mikel Arteta will have wanted to see.”
