Liverpool handed 'tough' blow after confirmed news from England camp

Kevin Campbell has claimed Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will have faced a “tough” decision when England came calling for Jordan Henderson ahead of this month’s Nations League fixtures.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Reds boss may have wanted to wrap the 31-year-old “in cotton wool” over the two-week break after his recent injury struggles.

Henderson, who hasn’t featured for Liverpool since 31 August, was called up to Gareth Southgate’s latest Three Lions squad to replace the injured Kalvin Phillips.

According to the Daily Mail (20 September), Klopp gave the midfielder his “blessing” to join up with the England squad despite being critical of Nations League fixtures since its inception.

The former Sunderland man is one appearance away from reaching the 70-cap milestone.

Campbell claimed Henderson’s fitness will be “key” to Liverpool regaining form after a poor start to the 2022-23 season.

He told Football Insider: “Unfortunately for Jurgen Klopp, this is how it works.

“Other teams have had to contend with the same thing.

“It’s not about what he wants. When your national team comes calling, you have to go – that’s the bottom line.

“I know he wants to wrap him in cotton wool. It’s tough both ways.

“Klopp has to get Liverpool going again and Henderson is a key part of that. He’s not played enough games this season because of his struggle with injury.

“Now he won’t be back until probably the Thursday before the next league game, it’s a tough one.

“But everyone is in the same boat.”
